Choosing the Best Therapy for You
Therapy isn't necessarily one-size-fits-all. Below is a list of possible options for you:
|
|
|
1:1 Counseling, generally meeting once a week, at least at first. Sometimes tapering to every other week (and sometimes meeting more than once a week, when it makes sense.)
Sessions are 50 minutes.
Focus can be on problem-solving, or more focused on longer term issues, (or both, as makes sense). |
|
|
Sessions that include both members of a couple when the issue at hand is viewed as a problem in ways the relationship works (or doesn't).
As in individual therapy, couples therapy can be more focused on problem-solving a specific issue or decision to be made, but most frequently is an exploration of recurring patterns in couples' dynamics that repeatedly either don't work, or are painful.
Sessions are 50 minutes, and sessions are usually weekly. |

Small therapy groups are an extraordinary way to decrease feelings of aloneness, and get validation from others. Meeting with people 'in the same boat' helps to normalize feelings, learn from each other how others manage, and get more than one perspective.
There are short term (or time limited) groups that run for 6 - 12 weeks, and ongoing groups that meet for years. And there are psycho-educational groups, which are focused on a particular issue, where there is support and sharing, along with a lot of information provided by the therapist.
Groups meet generally weekly, sometimes every other week, and meet for an hour and 15 minutes.
In order to join a group it's first necessary to meet with Mimi to make sure a group is the right fit for you -- that it will provide what you're specifically looking for from therapy. |

Body Image and Weight Loss Counseling / Coaching |
Can be in conjunction, as simply a part of, general therapy (for multiple issues), or can be more like coaching, with the focus specifically being on weight. This can be used when clients are in therapy with another therapist, but want to work on eating and weight too.
Weight loss counseling utilizes mutually designed changes to make, small and do-able, so that success can be made and be permanent. Most of my weight loss clients are "experienced dieters" with long dieting resumes, The goal, in addition to weight loss, is to reframe the weight loss process and can transform your relationship with food.
I also work with patients who are questioning, or planning for weight loss surgery. Psychological preparation is a huge factor in sucessful outcomes. I also see people who have had weight loss surgery and either just need support and guidance, or are starting to slip and gain weight |
